First-Generation Student Sees ‘Endless Possibilities’ Thanks to NU
Vania R.’s Story
Master of Education, Special Education with Preliminary Education Specialist Credential, Moderate-Severe
“I am a first-generation college student. Many of the steps I took I learned through failures and by taking a leap of faith. I was raised by two full-time working parents and loving grandparents who migrated to America for a better opportunity. I always knew I wanted to do something to help others, but I was not sure what it was exactly.”
“In 2012, my life changed when the grandma who had a great impact on my life had a hemorrhagic stroke, and my youngest brother was diagnosed with autism. I was able to replace worry and fear by learning more and being there for them. That is when I began to work with students with mild, moderate, and severe learning disabilities.”
“National University came into my life when we lost my grandma to COVID-19. As devastating as this experience was, National University helped me see endless possibilities. I could only imagine how proud my grandparents would be knowing that the leap of faith they took to come to America would lead to the opportunities I now have. I am excited to give back to our community and help my students find their voices as I embark on my journey of being a special education teacher and educational specialist M/S. I am so grateful to all the donors who support National University and students like me with their generous gifts.”
